Always wanted to be a beekeeper
I think it's just a natural step. I've been a gardener my whole life (thanks, Mom!). I've always seen bees buzzing around my plants and I've always known that more bees would only be a better thing - not a bad thing. Last year, I took the plunge, and I'm enjoying this hobby immensely. And it's not just the bees or the honey - it's knowing that I'm contributing to the overall ecology of my environment and contributing to solving the problem of Colony Collapse Disorder. I'm monitoring my bees for mites and other parasites, I'm changing my ways when it comes to casual use of pesticides and I'm almost calling some of the little lady bees by name now.
I was sitting in the garden today when this little lady came calling. Here, she's enjoying the bounty from kale that I allowed to bolt. The flowers are amazing, and so are the bees.
If you've ever thought about becoming a beekeeper, it really is a rewarding pursuit. You will get all the support you could need from people who use this website and Facebook page. Don't worry ... bee happy! :)
